NASA Shares Space Thanksgiving on ISS Low Earth Orbit

NASA Shares Space Thanksgiving on ISS Low Earth Orbit - On Thanksgiving, NASA shared a video of two American astronauts aboard the International Space Station or ISS showing how they celebrated the annual national holiday.

“We just wanted to wish you a very warm and happy Thanksgiving,” says Lindgren in the video published on NASA Facebook page. “We are incredibly thankful for the opportunity to be up here on the International Space Station, working and living in this amazing orbiting laboratory,” he added.

In the video, astronauts Kelly and Lindgren ate the space Thanksgiving menu: Some candied yams, potatoes and corn prepared for space missions, and freeze-dried smoked turkey meat.

NASA also published a special ‘Space To Ground’ report showing Astronauts Scott Kelly and Kjell Lindgren’s video.

Next Cargo To ISS

And speaking of Space To Ground, the report says the ISS mission crew on the ground (Orbital ATK staff) were hard at work on Thanksgiving day getting ready for the next scheduled cargo delivery to the orbital space station.

The unmanned Cygnus spacecraft is set to launch next week to send cargo to the International Space Station.

On the space station on the low Earth orbit, astronauts Kelly and Lindgren will use a robotic arm to reach out and capture the spacecraft containing the supplies, says NASA in the video. The Cygnus mission is the fourth resupply mission of Orbital ATK.

The unmanned delivery spacecraft will launch on December 3, and it will reach the space station on December 6.

The cargo contains more than 7,000 pounds of supplies and research equipments.

The International Space Station or ISS is the largest man-made object orbiting the Earth. It’s located at about 249 miles from Earth’s ground - and it serves as a microgravity research laboratory where scientists can conduct several experiments in biology, physics, and so on.

Since its launch in 1998, the ISS has been evolving - and today, the space laboratory weighs about 419,000 kgs.

According to NASA, the space station today is “as big inside as a house with five bedrooms.” The ISS has two bathrooms, a gymnasium and a big bay window.
